It's an expensive amp, but I've been through Allens, Hayseeds, several Dr. I just went through this same process trying to decide whether to replace my Allen amps with a Tone King Metropolitan. But the blackface amp tones are glorious and "3D", and with the attenuator the wildness of the tweed tones can finally be tamed and brought into line with the blackface side of the amp. There are less expensive amps that will be not quite as good (and that is merely a personal opinion that not all will share) but that are very, very good amps in their own right. Thx a lot to upcoming answers and any feedback or input would be greatly appreciated.Ībout the only "downside" IMO is that it's an expensive amp. So basically, my questions would be around this is there anything that should stop me from buying it, based on your experience with the amp or some known problems (or harsh sound, ice picky.)? Is there a better option that cover BF and tweed tone better in the price range (even if it is subjective to a certain point)? Also, am I right to think that it seems to be the perfect grab and go tone monster!! My problem is that it will be almost impossible for me to try it before buying it, unless I drive 900km to get to the dealer! The built in attenuator being a solid argument and the online video (with good headphones) and reviews are great. So I figured that the Imperial 20th would fit perfectly what I'm looking for. I would love to go old school and plug straight in and adjust the guitar knobs for lead and rhythm. I play mostly at home but want to have the flexibility to jam and gig when the opportunity will occur. I play blues (fat bluesy tone ala SRV, KWS without the talent., to Led Zep, ZZ Top) with a Strat, Tele Baja et LP jr with P90. My quest for the perfect tone has been long and went through a lot of amp in order to find the best one that would suit my needs and my style (all those amps being more off the shelve type LoneStar Special, DRRI, HRDIII, CDR, Peavey Delta Blues.) A lot a very nice amp, but always had the feeling that a little something wasn't there and I don't want to start doing mods. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Tone King Imperial 20th Anniversary. Always good reading with tons of useful info, so I thought I would try to have some of your input here. A long time reader, but not use to post message here.
